Highlights

Knights. Romans. Romantic Road & Co
Bavarian Swabia is full of experiences – whether you're following in the footsteps of knights and Romans or traveling along the world-famous Romantic Road.

In Augsburg, one of Germany's oldest cities, living history meets modern life: the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Water Management System of Augsburg” impresses with its unique combination of technology and culture.

In the UNESCO Global Geopark Ries, visitors can walk in the footsteps of a meteorite impact that occurred 15 million years ago, a natural wonder of global significance.

Families will find action and fun for young and old alike at LEGOLAND® Deutschland Resort in Günzburg.

The Swabian Danube Valley offers space for a wide variety of activities, whether hiking on the DonAUwald hiking trail – Germany's flattest premium hiking trail – cycling on the DonauTäler bike path, or searching for rare bird species in the Donaumoos.

A real highlight is Harburg Castle, one of the oldest and best-preserved castle complexes in southern Germany with an authentic medieval flair.

The journey is the destination – along the Romantic Road in Bavarian Swabia, seven historic towns with fascinating buildings line up one after the other: Wallerstein, Nördlingen, Harburg, Donauwörth, Rain, Augsburg and Friedberg.

In Nördlingen, the completely preserved city wall, which can be walked around in its entirety, invites visitors to take a stroll through centuries past.

The legendary Fugger legacy in Bavarian Swabia is visible in many places: In Augsburg's Fuggerei, the oldest social housing complex in the world, visitors can gain an insight into life in times gone by. In Weißenhorn, too, the magnificent old town bears witness to the influence of this famous merchant family.

The region is also considered the “cradle of the Wittelsbach dynasty”. Visitors can experience the history of this important noble dynasty at the Sisi Castle in Unterwittelsbach, around the Wittelsbach Castle in Friedberg, or along the Oberwittelsbach history trail.

Pilgrims and those seeking peace and quiet find inspiration and relaxation on the Way of St. James, following historic paths through a landscape steeped in culture and spirituality.

What connects all these places are the people who shape them. The series Faces and Stories portrays personalities from Bavarian Swabia who provide insight into their everyday lives and share their favorite places. Whether baker, herb expert, tower keeper, or Michelin chef, distiller, lock keeper, traditional costume punk, or monastery priest, they are all ambassadors for their homeland and show how diverse this region is and what stories lie behind its sights.

Bavarian Swabia is perfect for cycling: Gentle river valleys, mystical riparian forests, and spectacular natural monuments such as the Ries Crater create ideal conditions for short breaks or big adventures by bike. The DonauTäler bike path, which opens up 14 idyllic side valleys of the Danube, also offers many options. The well-developed network of bike paths connects picturesque rivers such as the Iller, Zusam, Wörnitz, and Paar with classics such as the Danube and Lech bike paths, passing historic towns, beautiful nature, and hidden gems. Thanks to the “Flüssehüpfen” (river hopping) system, the routes can be flexibly combined – perfect for day trips or tours lasting several days.
